Summary
Objectives The scientific objectives of this concerted action were:
Activities An initial meeting was organised in May 1993 in Delft, which was devoted to an extensive exchange of the experience of the partners with earlier activities in the area of image analysis, as well as to an exchange of the possibilities and the performance of the equipment available in the institutes. During this meeting the time schedule for the whole Concerted Action was decided. The meeting was attended by ten participants representing the partners involved.
The Second European Symposium on Image Analysis for Pulp and Paper Production was organised by IfP, Darmstadt, Germany, where 19 presentations were made, with three contributions from invited experts. The event attracted 85 participants (29 of whom were industry representatives) from ten countries. A supplier's session gave some manufacturers the opportunity to show camera and computer developments. Full texts of all papers were summarised in conference pre-prints and distributed to the participants. Additional copies may be obtained from IfP.
The first workshop was held at PTS in Munich, Germany, in February 1994. This meeting was attended by 16 participants, including experts from industry, and discussed the application of image analysis techniques in de-inking technology (dirt count). 13 papers were presented. Copies of abstracts or full texts of the papers were distributed to the participants.
A second workshop was organised and held by PFI in Oslo, Norway, in June 1994. It was attended by 15 participants, being a three-day programme dedicated to methods for measurement and characterisation of print quality. The material used for the presentations was distributed and summarised in a brochure, available from PFI.
A third workshop was organised and held by CTP in Grenoble, France, in November 1994. It was attended by 20 participants, three of them from industrial companies. This workshop focused on methods for measuring and characterising paper formation and paper quality. Some 15 papers were presented. The material used for the presentations was distributed and again summarised in a brochure, which can be ordered from CTP.
A fourth workshop was organised by PHU International and held at Arjo Wiggins Research Centre, Beaconsfield, UK, and PIRA International (UK) in April 1995, It was attended by ten representatives from institutes and nine participants from industrial companies. During this meeting the summarised results of the comparative mottle measurements made by the partners were discussed. Some twelve papers on this and a number of other image analysis topics were presented and discussed.
Arranged by STFI and PTS in Stockholm in June 1995 the Third European Symposium on Image Analysis for Pulp and Paper Production attracted some 60 delegates from industry and institutes. 24 papers were given covering virtually all aspects of image analysis application in the pulp and paper industry. In seven sessions the following topics were dealt with: General IA techniques, pulping and paper-making control, fibre morphology, de-inking, sheet structure, surface structure, and print and gloss quality. Abstracts of all papers and, in some cases, full texts were distributed during the conference and can be obtained from STFI.
A fifth workshop was organised by CTP and held at Arjo Wiggins in Issy les Moulineaux in and at Copacel, Paris, in September 1995. It was attended by eleven participants from institutes and four delegates from industrial companies. The meeting was mainly dedicated to the various -possibilities of measuring microgloss and a comparison of the techniques employed in the various institutes. Eight short papers were presented on these topics with another eight focused on other areas. Copies of all material presented was again summarised and can be obtained from CTP.
Eight short-term exchange visits of scientists from the participating institutes to other institutes took place within the three-year period of the Concerted Action.
Exploitation It is probably too early to discuss the exploitation of the outcome of this Concerted Action as it was the first attempt to talk about the very specific problems, possibilities and restrictions of image analysis in an extremely broad spectrum of potential applications on a broad basis. The documents produced in the wake of the many workshops and symposia do however provide a very comprehensive and complete survey of what was current and what will be going on in this area in future.
Conclusions The main objectives of this Concerted Action were to develop basic ideas with respect to standardised test procedures for the application of image analysis, and to develop a European network of knowledge. The individual reports of the participants unanimously agree that the activity was extraordinary helpful for their current and future work in this area. The various events organised were always on a very high scientific level and helped to show that the whole subject is extremely complex. Hence, with respect to a standardisation of test procedures, it was not as effective as had been hoped when the project started. It was felt that such efforts should be the subject of more specialised research projects in the near future. The activity was instrumental in terms of the identification of common interests, research needs, and areas where standardisation is particularly important and necessary. It definitely encouraged very detailed plans for further co-operation between the partners or groups of partners in the area of image analysis.
