OBJECTIVE:

To review existing data and research on the effects of harvesting on:

a.

• i) nutrient removal

• ii) nutrient availability;

• iii) future tree growth; and

• iv) effectiveness of remedial nutrient input options.

b.

• To assess the potential of existing simulation models to predict the sustainability of different harvesting systems, and the potential use of ameliorative practices across Europe.

OUTLINE:

This Concerted Action would allow researchers working on the related topics of nutrient removals from forests, forest nutrient dynamics, biological waste recycling to forests, and computer simulation modelling, to pool current knowledge. It would facilitate the transfer of information between research groups and further the use of available simulation models. Gaps in current research could be identified to guide future research direction.
