Contract No AIR1-CT92-0367
Total Cost 15 500 000
EC Contribution 4 650 000
Start Date 01/12/1992
Duration 36 months

OBJECTIVE:

EEIC-EUROLEIN will demonstrate a new harvesting technique for fibre flax with straw in tangled and parallel deposition and a mobile scutching in the field. For hemp the traditional way of harvesting will be retained. Breaking down of the flax fibres will be done by steam explosion and ultrasonic technology and by mechanical break down. The steam explosion and the ultrasonic processes are succeeded by washing and drying processes. The following purification of the broken down fibres has to be done by textile machinery (carding,...) resulting in flax short fibres. The machinery in spinning and weaving industry has to be adapted to the short fibres in a series of semi industrial tests. For hemp break down the enzymatic treatment will be used additionally. A part of the hemp short fibres will be mixed with other components to make spinning tests for drawing up new hemp fibre utilization in the textile sector. The different types of fibres out of all processes will be tested regarding their properties as natural component for reducing man-made fibres. All produced short fibres shall be tested for use in the papermill industry. The most important objective during the 3 years is drawing up of a technical chain using all kind of fibres in different branches of industry with the highest dependency on fibre quality, length and so on.
