Introduction:
This is the proceedings of a conference held in Stuttgart in April 1997. It was the final meeting of the Biomass Gasification Network ( AIR3-CT94-2284) and provided an end of term meeting for the PyrolysisNetwork - PyNE ( AIR3-CT94-1857). These two networks, which have been operating since the beginning of 1995, bring together all the European experts in those areas. This has enabled all those involved and interested in gasification or pyrolysis of biomass respectively to share experience and information and help more rapid exploitation of the technologies. The joint meeting provided a unique opportunity for everyone in Europe to hear of the latest developments and successes in both areas. In addition the meeting formed the Third EC-Canada joint thermochemical contractors meeting after the successful second meeting in Toronto in May 1995 and was co-sponsored by Natural Resources Canada.
