The Integrated Production and Exploitation of Biological Materials for Non-Food Uses

Projects in sub-area 5.2 Non-Food Development

Here, market orientation is a pre-requisite for success along the complete integrated production, processing, utilisation and disposal chain for green chemicals and polymers, thus a strong industrial participation and focus is essential for selection. The main areas are considered in terms of:

The Market. The production and sustainable use of biomaterials such as bioplastics and composites, or bulk and fine chemicals, with enhanced raw material quality and end-use performance will be demonstrated and supported by market and life cycle analysis studies. The results will be applied in the promotion of standards, codes, guidelines and databases for the consumer and end-user.

The Factory. Biological, physical, and chemical processing and modification of biological raw materials producing large volume or higher added value chemicals, polymers, composites and biofuels will be developed. Improved processing technologies, which enhance the recovery of purer products and allow the recovery of potentially valuable components are sought. This includes addressing the problems associated with scale-up processes, the adaptation of conventional material processing technologies, the modification of functional groups, along with the processing of wastes.

The Raw Materials. Biological raw materials matching industrial requirements with respect to quality and security of supply will be developed. Yields of valuable molecules will be maximised with an emphasis on molecular farming and storage systems that preserve and increase the recovery of valuable components. This includes near point of production processing technologies, which add value, reduce transport costs, and improve whole crop utilisation.
