Contract No: QLK5-2000-00619
Project Type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Start Date: 01-01-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total Cost: 1,619,972 EUR
EC Contribution: 809,986 EUR
Scientific Officer: Ignacio SEOANE

Abstract:

The project aims to improve the technology of paper recycling to solve critical "stickies" problems related to adhesive entering the deinking process. The approach is to optimise the adhesive size and shape at the pulping step in order to remove them completely by pressure screening and centrifugal cleaning. The basic mechanisms of pulping and fundamentals of screening hydrodynamics including numerical flow simulation, will be studied with respect to the rheological properties of adhesives. New pulping, screening and cleaning technology will be developed. Flotation and a new pressure filtration technology will be studied to clean further the pulp and the process waters. Optimised strategies for the removal of stickies in deinking lines and basic knowledge towards recycling friendly adhesives will be established.
