Quality of Life - 5.3.2 The Forestry-Wood Chain : Solid Wood Products

Contract No: QLK5-2000-00801
Project Type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Start Date: 01-01-2001
Duration: 36 months
Total Cost: 1,539,177 EUR
EC Contribution: 897,785 EUR
Scientific Officer: Ignacio SEOANE

Abstract:

The project addresses the need to improve the performance and durability of wooden-joinery in order to make it more commercially attractive as a long-term investment. Wood joinery is losing market share to products made from alternative materials at the expense of its environmental credentials. This project will make wood joinery in Europe more competitive by improving its stability and durability through a process of vacuum impregnation of the primer and preservative in a single treatment operation. This will be achieved by a three-stage experimental research programme which will:

  1. develop the process through a selection of compatible products and process schedules;
  2. Verify its technical benefits; and
  3. establish its commercial feasibility using an experimental treatment plant.
The research will lead to a better public image of wood joinery by improving performance resulting in significant cuts in on-site failures.
