Abstract
Among the biomass-derived biofuels, pyrolysis oil (PO) appears to be the more cost effective. Pilot plants installed in Europe suffer of many defects typical of young technologies. Moreover, the oils have unfavourable fuel properties. The proposals intends to advance the pyrolysis technology developing new concepts for the pyrolysis process and making technological improvements in the pilot plant that will used to assess the concepts. The use of the oil in small and large-scale thermal boilers is foreseen to verify the fitness of PO to substitute heavy and light fossil fuels and to assess the environmental impact.
