Abstract
The purpose of this network is the exchange of knowledge and know-how in the area of genetically modified organisms in plants (GMPs). The network will include representatives from various regions of Europe and different expertise backgrounds. The project will take into account both the benefits and limitations of GMPs to our society. Issues will be presented from the scientist, industry, media and ultimately public perspectives. Thus not only scientific but also social, ethical and regulatory issues will be addressed. These will be discussed and presented both within the network and in the public arena, based largely on the experience of the German Food Biotechnology Communication Initiative (FBCI). The aim of the project is the establishment of a knowledge based trans-European structure to serve interested parties for the purpose of discussing and communicating key issues of GMPs.
Biotechnology affects the quality, safety and general well-being of every one of us. In the fifth framework, the EC places emphasis on problem solving and improving the quality of life in the EU. This requires biotechnology to be examined the context not only of scientific but also economic, social and ethical considerations. One important aspect of this approach is to improve public awareness of biotechnology, and in the case of this project, GMPs. The project will establish, with representatives from various groups active in the GMP debate, a thematic network to deal with issues of GMPs. The networks function will be to exploit this synergy of experience for objective dissemination and communication of GMP related issues.
