Abstract

The objective of this demonstration project is to re-commission the Värnamo Gasification Plant and demonstrate its operational capability with 100% RDF and up to at least 25% used tyres (TDF). These waste recovered fuels are attractive due to their low cost and are produced throughout the EU and other developed economies. The technology involved (pressurised gasification) is innovative and this is the only IGCC plant operated by biomass fuels worldwide. The proposed technology is targeting the medium range of power applications (10-20MWe) for which there is no reliable waste gasification technology available in the market. The plant will generate 6MWe and 9MWth for district heating. The implementation of this project not only provides an accelerated penetration of IGCC technology but will also address energy production from low-cost waste fuels found in abundance all over the EU.

Participants

In order to meet this objective a consortium, led by a private company (Helector S.A.) and also incorporating a research institute (CRES/partner) and a utility company (Sydkraft AB), has been assembled. It has worked out the details of properly re-operating and modifying the Värnamo plant so as to carry out extended tests on RDF and TDF fuels.
