Abstract
This project analysed the position of GM crops in Europe, investigating how current practices - regulatory measures, expert judgements and stakeholder roles - compare to different accounts of the precautionary principle. These practices were studied at EU level and in 7 member states, through an advisory panel and scenario-analysis workshops. The project built upon and integrated earlier studies of public attitudes, risk regulation, precaution and deliberation. Using the analytical results, the project suggests how official guidelines and expert bodies can be made more appropriate for addressing the policy problems that the EU faces in this area.
