European Energy Crops Processing and Utilisation in Europe

The Concerted Action was completed within twelve months and resulted in establishment of the European Energy Crops Internetwork (EECI), which started in July 1997.

OBJECTIVE

This is a concerted action with seventeen partners from fourteen EU countries. The main objectives are:

  1. to improve the access to existing information on the production, processing and utilisation of energy crops

  2. to enhance the integration of research, development and implementation activities on energy crops, through:

    • the identification of current scientific and practical achievements on energy crops;

    • the identification of the differences and similarities of the agricultural, technical, environmental, economic and institutional aspects of the several energy crops (such as Miscanthus, willow, poplar, rapeseed, Sorghum, canary reed, etc);

    • the identification of structural and country specific bottlenecks to be overcome for large scale implementation;

    • the establishment of a European Energy Crops Information Dissemination and Exchange Network.

The tasks to be carried out to reach these objectives are:

  1. the development of a standardised reporting format for gathering information in the fourteen countries

  2. the preparation of fourteen country review reports, following the reporting format developed

  3. a workshop at which these reviews are presented and in which discussions are held between relevant institutes and other organisations on future initiatives

  4. the preparation of a final report for wide dissemination in Europe, to those involved in the implementation of energy crops production, processing and utilisation of energy generation

  5. the establishment of the European Energy Crops Information Dissemination and Exchange Network.
