Environmentally sound shock-absorbing packaging materials, based on wood wool or paper
Objectives
In recent years the regulations concerning packaging materials have been tightened, e.g. the German legislation was recently followed up by EU Directives. The aim of the new legislation is to reduce the massive environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable non-recyclable packaging materials.
In principle, the new legislation should give a boost to packaging materials made from natural raw materials (paper, wood wool, etc.). However, such packaging materials cause some difficulties. In the case of wood wool packaging, it is difficult to control dust, and the wool fibres break easily, which makes the material rather messy to work with. With paper packaging, the difficulty is that paper reacts to changes in humidity and temperature that in turn causes changes in the paper's moisture content and processing capabilities.
Thorso Molle is a producer of wood wool and basic paper products for packaging. A feasibility study made as a CRAFT 1 project identified partners for the development of environmentally sound shock-absorbing packaging materials. Different shock-absorbing packaging products have been developed and tested in lab-scale and subsequently introduced to potential customers. Parallel to this, pilot experiments have been carried out for single key steps in the complete production processes. Focus on one particular product for further development is now to be achieved. It is the aim of the present Stage 2 proposal to develop a prototype production unit for the new packaging material.
