Abstract
ThermalNet- the new European Network for biomass pyrolysis, gasification and combustion.
ThermalNet, funded through Altener in the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme, brings together participants in projects covering the three main thermochemical routes for conversion biomass to heat, electricity and higher value fuels through
In addition to the website the network also produces a Newsletter Issue 1, February 2006.
This new network provides a forum to review and help resolve the technical and non-technical barriers that may be encountered in implementing these three important biomass conversion technologies. The new structure also provides a high level of interaction between the technologies and barriers so that all the technology areas can benefit from the experience and knowledge of the others.
Objectives
This project will establish a closely integrated cluster of three Networks on thermal processing of biomass for fuels and electricity. This includes combustion, gasification and pyrolysis, with a common focus of providing support for more rapid and more effective implementation of all the technologies in the market place by addressing technical, nontechnical and commercialisation issues. The whole chain is considered from biomass production to end-use applications so that the important interfaces can be addressed.
Activities
A matrix of three technologies and eleven tasks provide a high level of interaction between common issues but retains the individual requirements and opportunities of the three technologies. Over 50 experts from all three technologies will provide expertise to establish a comprehensive trans-European forum on thermal biomass conversion that will cover all the technical, economic, market, environmental and policy issues that require development for the establishment of a successful European thermal bio-energy industry. The forum will disseminate its activities and outputs through the medium of technology focussed biannual newsletters, websites, reports and conference proceedings.
There will be extensive interaction with other networks such as IEA Bioenergy, Bioenergy Network of Excellence, EUBIONET II, and national programmes.
Results
Results will be disseminated by a biannual newsletter for each technology, dedicated websites with presentations and reports, regular progress and technical reports, minutes of meetings. Policy and strategy reviews will be published to aid policy makers and decision makers.Every effort will be made to ensure that the emerging bioenergy industry sector can contribute to and benefit from the meetings, the activities and the outputs from the Networks by establishment of a comprehensive database and through interaction with other networks.
