The LIFE Programme
LIFE, the Financial Instrument for the Environment, introduced in 1992, is one of the spearheads of the European Union's environmental policy. It co-finances projects in three areas:
LIFE is open to all EU countries, some candidate countries (currently Romania) and some third countries bordering the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea.
Current Programme 2005-2006 - calls for proposals and further funding closed
The deadlines for the submission of proposals under the current LIFE III programme, which finishes at the end of 2006, have expired. There will be no further call under the current LIFE III programme.
New Programme - LIFE+ - Proposed
A new financial support programme for environmental policy, LIFE+, was proposed by the Commission in September 2004 and is being discussed by the Council and European Parliament, may provide future opportunities for funding.
LIFE+ would run from 2007-2013, in accordance with the 'Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council concerning the Financial Instrument for the Environment (LIFE+)'. At a meeting in Brussels in December 2005, the Council agreed to the basic principles underlying the Commission's proposals. However, it has requested greater prominence to nature and biodiversity and provision for the financing of certain environmental technology projects, when they are not eligible for financing under other Community financial instruments.
