The Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research is a scientific organization for research and education in the biomedical field. Legally incorporated in 1961, the Institute started its activity in Milan on February 1st, 1963. Today research centers in Bergamo and in S. Maria Imbaro (Chieti) are also in operation. The aim of the Institute is to improve the quality of human health and life. To achieve this goal, investigations on the biological mechanisms of living organisms and their susceptibility to disease or studies on the "behaviour" of drugs inside the body are most valuable. Research methods range from the molecular level (molecular biology) to humans (clinical pharmacology and epidemiology). The results of this research help in new drug development and improve the efficacy of those already in use.

The Institute's three main fields of interest are: cancer, mental and nervous system disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. There are also research programs on kidney diseases, toxic effects of environmental pollutants, several rare diseases, pain and addictive drugs. The Institute's educational programs range from training for laboratory technicians to postgraduate courses in pharmacology. Through meetings, seminars and publications it disseminates scientific knowledge and encourages better medical practice and the rational use of drugs.
