UK-Grown Non-Wood Fibres: Meeting the needs of industry |
This Item covers a MAFF (UK) meeting held in February 1997 which discussed the industrial aspects of the introduction of new fibre crops (hemp, flax) into the UK and their relative costs and technical merits compared to imported fibres, including cotton, jute, coir and sisal. The meeting considered UK policy in the light of EU legislation (Common Agricultural Policy) and support measures for R&D in this area initiated in the UK. Commercial aspects covered uses including considerations of which fibres were required for activities such as: geotextiles and use in heavy metal and oil spillage clean up; composites used in moulded panels in cars; use of fibres in furniture; coarse non-woven materials for backings and packings; coarse tow for spinning of household textiles; and cottonisation.
