OBJECTIVE:
- In the light of the gaps revealed by the preliminary work of
the COST 813 group, a first stage will be to complete, on a qualitatively
equivalent way data concerning the occurrence in West Europe and
the importance of the main diseases and pest insects of forest
nurseries. The various group members will collaborate to this
work. The cocoordinators and their staff shall insure the quality
and the coherence of the gathered information.
- The next stage will be the production, of an easy-to-use determination
key for all the concerned damaging agents, and of a balanced text
describing the pests enabling the confirmation of their identification
by nursery managers and giving specific control methods. This
part, abundantly illustrated with photos and drawings furnished
by the participants, will be produced by the coordinators and
their staff, with the collaboration of all the participants.
- With a view to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques,
a survey will be conducted in the various countries to collect
as much information as possible on the differences observed in
nurseries in function of the tree types grown, of cultivation
methods, site, climate and other useful variables. When possible,
information on the use of natural enemies of the damaging agents
will be added. This knowledge will enable to establish first guidelines
directed towards an IPM in nurseries. The participating members
will contribute with the data collection in their countries and
with their respective specialised knowledge; the co-coordinators
and their staff will organise the collect of a balanced and coherent
information in the participating countries and synthesize this
work. The knowledge thus acquired will make up an important part
of the publication.
Expected advantages of the project:
- Improve the pest control and subsequently the quality of nursery
trees and of the European forest productivity less damage, enhanced
growth.
- Improve the nursery productivity and introduce an IPM approach
more compatible with the environment in those areas of intensive
production.
- To be grounded on a very broad scale in Europe and ensure all
the information obtained is dispatched back to the same entity.
- To provide socio-economic support to regions, generally less-favoured,
where nurseries are often located.
- To help the nursery growers to determine correctly the damaging
agents, allowing the best evaluation of the control methods to
use.
