Contract No AIR3-CT94-1903
Total Cost 108 750
EC Contribution 108 750
Start Date 01/01/1995
Duration 36 months

OBJECTIVE:

The overall objective is to devise the basis for a common system of classification of forest sites that can be used alongside existing national, subnational and local classifications.

The specific objectives are:

  1. To decide which climatic variables should be used to define zones and subzones as the basis for the classification.

  2. To decide how a soil quality grid having axes of soil moisture regimes and soil nutrient regimes can be used to define forest site types within each climatic zone or subzone.

  3. To propose definitions of classes of soil moisture and soil nutrient regime and methods for diagnosing them in the field or via analysis of soil samples.

  4. To decide how indicator plant species and existing classifications of forest humus forms could be used to aid site diagnosis within the proposed system of forest site classification.

  5. To encourage by example the correlation of existing site classifications and classifications at national, subnational or local level with the proposed system.

  6. To encourage by example the correlation of the proposed system with classifications of native woodland vegetation.
