Project Type: RS (Research and Technological Development Project)
Start Date: 01-01-2001

Abstract:

WOOD-EN-MAN focuses on sustainable use of wood-based biomass resources for energy aiming at further development of sustainable forest management in Europe, including socio-economic aspects. End-user products will be based on integrated ecological, biological and socio-economic research.

Central topics are:

  1. ecosystem nutrient vulnerability (nutrient balances and soil nutrient release capability),
  2. environmental effects of wood-ash recycling on soil, seepage water, mychorriza and trees,
  3. insect biodiversity, including insect pests in connection with storing marginal wood resources in the forest,
  4. socio-economic and economic effects at management and policy levels, including monetary value of identified environmental effects, market and policy failures, competitiveness of wood-based biomass compared to other energy systems, and how to affect competitiveness by public fiscal measures.
Operational management guidelines (a book) and policy recommendations at national, EU and Pan-European levels (a report) will be published and disseminated together with other end-user products, e.g. PC-tool, database, web-page, seminars and workshops.
