Abstract:

The forestry wood chain (FWC) consists of forest owners, machine entrepreneurs, wood-procurement organisations, sawmills and pulp and paper mills linked togetherthrough a complex production and business network. Efficient and market-driven operations within this network are vitally important, particularly in the face of increasing international competition. There is a strong demand from the industry for the development of fast and accurate information flows between all the actors in the FWC. The rapid advances in information technology (eg internet and wireless telecommunication) offer new opportunities to improve information management and decision support in the FWC. The overall objective of this project is to increase the competitiveness, employment and environmental concerns of the European FWC through application of these new technical opportunities to improve information flows and decision support.
