ERA-PG: European Research Area Plant Genomics |
Plants are essential to human life. Either directly or indirectly, plants produce all of the world's food. They also provide materials, pharmaceuticals and offer renewable sources of energy. In European industry and agriculture, plants have a central role. Studying their genomes is essential to drive innovation, stimulate commercial exploitation and keep Europe's economy healthy.
Network
ERA-PG is a a network of research funding organisations responsible for the development of national or regional plant genomics research programmes. It will concentrates on creating a stimulating and fruitful environment for European plant genomics together with the scientific community.
Activity
The activity started in 2004 with twelve member organisations from eleven countries funded through the EU's 6th Framework Programme. The Network is commited to expand membership to countries that are launching plant genomics initiatves. In 2005 four new countries have joined.
