Abstract

TOPCOMBI is an Integrated Project within the 6th European Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development started on March 1st 2005.

Within the Thematic Priority "Nanotechnologies and Nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials and new production processes and devices", the project addresses current problems of the European process industries through 22 industrial and academic partners from 11 European countries that have formed a consortium which will work together for five years.

The project aims todevelop alternative catalytic synthesis routes answering demands in chemical production by applying high throughput and miniaturization methodologies. The IP will focus on topics stemming from European citizens urging needs for efficient use of sustainable energy and resources, safe chemical products and environmental protection.

Main aims

The aims will be met by a combination of industrial and academic resources in a common strategy to pass innovative findings from laboratory to pilot and to process scale by shorter cycle times, higher quality at lowered cost, and decreased environmental impact (waste reduction and energy savings by 50%). A life-cycle and economic evaluation of process development for future industrial strategies will be developed.

The project has the potential to greatly increase the sustainability of the industry. It promises decisive breakthroughs to rationalise the use of energy resources, minimise emissions, intensify the use of renewable bio-resources and lead to the design and affordable production of less harmful products.
