Objectives
Aeroponics is an improved form of hydroponics, that
is the culturing of plants in an aqueous medium rather than in soil. It has
significant potential ecological benefits. In horticulture, it enables
continuous production. This can give the user a competitive advantage over
methods that are climate-dependent. This could be of advantage anywhere within
Europe. The process can lead to water saving and the products may have improved
organoleptic properties. The method is simple and easy to adopt. It eliminates
contamination and erosion of soil. For a small agricultural undertaking,
irrespective of the crop being produced, the user may obtain a higher yield per
unit of cultivated land. Hence, the income will be higher than that from other
production methods, whether in a greenhouse, other controlled environment
structure or in the open. During the last few years, research on aeroponics has
produced positive results. This demonstration project, will develop systems to
enable continuous growth of various crops through sequential cycles using
aeroponic techniques.
Expected Results
The demonstration project
should confirm the research findings, the technical capabilities and the
economic benefits.
