CTVO-NET, Final Conference

Germany June 2000. Edited by Wenke Stelter, Birger Kerckow and Monika Hagen ISBN 3-00-006959-3

These conference proceedings, produced by the CTVO-net (Chemical-Technical Utilisation of Vegetable Oils) include full papers or abstracts of the oral and poster presentations, as submitted by the authors. The book presents brief details of the members of the network, followed by an overview of EC non-food activities and the paper of R Kamminga that provides the background to both RTD activities and to the vegetable oil industry in general. Coming from the industrial side Kamminga suggested that

These views are considered to reflect the needs of industry, where the benefits of change need to outweigh the costs of change through the complete production chain from field to end user. In terms of benefits, one section is entitled 'Green Alone is not Enough', suggesting that if this is the only criteria, then some sort of subsidy is needed, which may not make sense for the relatively small proportion (15%) of the 100 million tonnes of vegetable oils produced.

Many of the other presentations (see contents list below) had a strong industrial background or flavour. Having listened to these presentations, Ciaran Mangan (European Commission) summarises the views expressed, combining those of industry, agriculture and research. He indicates the wide diversity of the subject and hence the difficulty of rationalisation, but recognises the following areas as of 'particular relevance':

So, the opening talk and the final summary reach more or less the same conclusions, substantiated by the individual presentation and posters. This represents a valuable consensus of opinion and should provide a useful background to anyone seeking funding from the EC for continuing RTD activities in the area of production and utilisation of vegetable oils for use in non-food applications:
