Robinia multipurpose sustainability: Internet assisted

Objectives

This concerted action aims to develop an information network covering various aspects and experiences of the production chain for producing fuel wood and timber using the leguminous perennial tree black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia). Robinia is well adapted to many Mediterranean areas, where most SRF species are not suitable. Various other applications of this plant have already been identified, for example pulp and biocomposites. The range of options to be considered covers all aspects from agronomy to potential end use of products. The data collected by the network will be made available through the Internet and other suitable media. The use of such a network can ensure good interaction between the participants. The network will include NGOs, institutions, universities, SMEs and local bodies interested in Robinia. Interests range from seed production to final multipurpose industrial use. The Concerted Action will bring together studies, results of RTD projects and other initiatives in the field of Robinia already funded by public authority or private bodies.

Technical Approach

The concerted action will work with several 'soft' activities integrated by a full Internet connection. Activities to be supported will include exchange of information, thematic meetings, general meetings, creation of databases, case studies, feasibility studies, econometric evaluations, etc. organised within eight task areas as follows:

Expected Results

The project will identify needs for further research and then plan a European research project.
