The Swedish Ethanol Development Foundation (SSEU) was founded in 1983 and was based in Örnsköldsvik. SSEU's goal was to develop the production and use of ethanol within Swedish industry as well as transportation.

In 1999 the organisation changed its name to the BioAlcohol Fuel Foundation, BAFF, as it broadened its international focus and included methanol as well as ethanol in its interests.
